Tutorial

Welcome! This is a step-by-step guide to understanding how to use the Study Bunny app. Click the hyperlinks below to jump to the relevant section. If your primary language is not English, we recommend you translate this webpage.

How to use the timer

  1. In the top right corner of the home page, click the drop down menu
  2. Click the book icon to open the timer settings.
  3. There are 3 components to the timer
    1. Timer Mode. The green bar at the top can be clicked. You can choose between 3 different timer modes.
      1. Countdown: In this mode, the timer will count from whatever time you set to 0.
      2. Stopwatch: in this mode, you do not set a time. Your time will count up from 0, and you stop the session when you are done. You will get occasional reminders in case you accidentally forget to turn the timer off. If you forgot to turn the timer off in this mode and you accidentally gained coins, these can be removed in Settings. You can also edit or delete incorrect time in the Study Tracker. (Please see How to use the Study Tracker)
      3. Break (no coins). This is the mode you use when you want to take a break after a session. You do not gain or lose coins. This is preferred to using the emergency pause function in the middle of a session, in which you WILL lose gains after extended time.
    2. Timer Slider
      1. Drag the gray bunny icon on the slider to set your time. The further to the right that you drag it, the more purple the slider bar will be. It goes up in increments of 5 minutes, up to 180 minutes.
    3. Color Tag
      1. This icon looks like a tag to the left of the start button. Click it. You can choose a color to represent the subject that you are studying during the session. You can also type in the subject name that corresponds to the color. If you change your mind about the name or color later, it can be edited in the Study Tracker. (Please see How to use the Study Tracker)
  4. Once you have these 3 items set, you can start your study session by clicking the Start button. You know you are in your session if the bunny is studying with a book. You will notice that under the drop down menu certain icons are grayed out. This is because you can only access essential study tools while you study.
  5. To stop the study session, click the universal stop button (square). You will be asked if you are sure you want to end the session. You will gain coins for any time that you accumulated, even if you end the session early.
  6. To pause the study session, click the universal pause symbol. You will be led to a page with motivational quotes and a pause timer that counts up. After some time, you will start to lose coins if you pause for too long. Therefore, using the pause timer as a break timer is NOT recommended. The pause feature is intended for you to use when you lose focus during your session and need redirection. It can also be used for short emergency breaks (e.g. bathroom breaks, grabbing a snack, texting back a friend).
  7. Once you have completed your session, you will get a push notification on your phone. This notification may have sound/vibration depending on your phone settings. There is no audible alarm when you complete a session, as this feature is not currently possible with the game engine.
  8. With the phone push notification, you will then see a “Great Work” page. When using the timer, you will gain 1 coin for every 10 minutes of studying. This rounds up from every 5 minutes. You have 4 options:
    1. Watch a video ad to double the coins that you earned. Note: you can only gain up 10 extra coins per day through doubling coins. For example: You studied for 1 hr without pausing and gained 6 coins, you can double it for a total of 12 coins. At this point you have earned 6 out of 10 EXTRA coins for the day. If you study for another 1 hour session, you can still double coins, but instead of 12 coins, you will get only 10. This is because after your 6 coins, you can get a maximum of 4 more extra coins for the day from doubling. If you study any more for the day, you cannot double coins.
    2. Click the book icon with the repeat symbol. This will repeat the study session that you just completed. This allows you to skip setting up the timer again if you want to keep studying. You will know you are studying because the bunny is studying with a book. You will also notice the coins you earned float to your coin count.
    3. Click the coffee cup icon with the clock symbol. This will take you straight into a break (no coins) session. The amount of time in the break depends on the timer settings for the last completed break timer session. You will know you are in break mode because the bunny will not have a book. You will also notice the coins you earned float to your coin count.
    4. Click the house icon. This will take you back to the home page. You will also notice the coins you earned float to your coin count.

  4. When you click on an item, it will ask you if you want to buy it (green button) or preview it for 10 seconds. (purple button). Note: When you preview items, the layering of items does not accurately represent how items layer when you purchase them. Once you buy an item. You can add it to room (yellow button) or remove it from room (orange button). An easy way to remove all items from your homepage is to go to Settings and click the “Hide all items” button.
  5. Once you add an item to the room, it will be placed in the center of the screen. There are 3 functions with items:
    1. Dragging. Use your finger to drag the item.
    2. Resizing. While holding down an item with one finger, use another finger to pinch in and out to change the size of the item.
    3. Rotate. While holding down an item with one finger, use another finger to swivel around the item to rotate it.
  6. If at any time you want to have the original item’s size and orientation, or if an item ever gets stuck or lost on your screen, you can remove the item from within the store, and re-add it. If the item does not move, go to setting and enable draggable items.
  7. Alternatively you can use your coins to buy study music. Under the drop down menu, locate the music note. You can play music while you study and even while your phone screen is turned off. To stop the music you must go back to the music section to pause it.

    2. Use it to feed your bunny and increase your happy meter. This is only possible in happy meter mode, which can be turned on in Settings. (Please see How to use Happy Meter Mode). Once in this mode, if your carrot count in the top left corner is one or more, you can use your finger to drag a carrot from the top left corner carrot count, to the bunny. You will notice that the bunny eats the carrot and the happy meter bar will increase.

There is no way to recover a forgotten username or password. If you forgot your login info and still have your Study Bunny data, we recommend you just create another account as a new user to save your existing data. You also cannot delete accounts, so if you no longer want your account you can only abandon it.
  5. You will now see that you are logged in. Your username will be displayed, along with 4 buttons. You can:
    1. Log off
    2. Cloud Save
      1. This button will save your local app data that you see on your device to the cloud. Be careful when you switch devices that your app is not blank, otherwise you will overwrite what was last saved. You must have an internet connection. We HIGHLY recommend you click Cloud Save frequently so you don't lose your data. This is not done automatically so you must manually save.
    3. Cloud Load
      1. This button will load your last saved cloud data onto your device. Be very careful that you have recently Cloud Saved BEFORE you Cloud Load. Otherwise all your local data will be overwritten with old cloud-saved data. When transferring data to a new device, download the blank app, log in to your account, then Cloud Load.

How to use Happy Meter Mode

  1. Happy Meter mode is an optional way to increase motivation by turning on the bunny’s emotions. The more you study, the more happy it will be. Go to Settings and toggle on the Happy Meter. In regular happy meter mode, your happy meter will decrease by about 2 bars every day at 4 am.
  2. You can increase your bunny’s happiness in the following ways:
    1. Study
      1. If your happy meter is full when you complete a study session, you will gain some extra coins as well
    2. Buy store items
      1. The happy meter will increase proportionally to the price of the item
    3. Playing music
      1. This will increase the happy meter slightly and it is capped per day

  3. If you feel that the Happy Meter is too easy for your studying needs, you may turn on Challenge Mode in Settings. In this mode, the happy meter resets to empty every day and it is significantly more difficult to fill up the bar.

How to use Honesty Mode

  1. This is an optional mode you can turn on in Settings if you want negative reinforcement. If your timer is running and you leave the app then return to it, you will receive a page that will ask you “Were you distracted?” If you click “No”, you will return to the app and continue studying. If you click “Yes” you will be taken to a spinning wheel. You may lose 1 coin, 2 coins, or have to watch an ad.
  2. This mode does not “block” your use of other apps, rather, when you return to the app, you must be honest about whether or not you were distracted. We find that strict blocking of apps requires many permissions and can be incorrectly punishing in some cases. To avoid these issues, we allow the user to make this judgement. (Even if the app did have a blacklist/whitelist feature, you could theoretically choose not to block a distracting app at any time... so just be honest with yourself!)

How to use the Study Tracker

  1. In the top right corner of the home page, click the drop down menu
  2. Click the bar graph to go to the Study Tracker. The tracker automatically logs time that you studied with the timer. You can also manually add time and edit logged time in week view of the tracker.
  3. You will initially see the month overview. The color and subject of the horizontal bars will correspond to what you set with the tag icon when you set your timer.
  4. You will see a small plus symbol on the right side of the screen. Click it to add a subject with a color to the legend. Any existing lines on the legend can be clicked to edit the subject/color.
  5. To hide/show the legend and plus symbol, look for the drop down menu on the bottom right corner of the screen. Click the green tag.
  6. The other buttons under the drop down menu are the 8h button, which changes the horizontal axis between 8 hours and 16 hours, and the bar graph button, which will display study statistics.
  7. You can also switch from month view to week view by clicking the toggle in the upper right hand corner. You cannot edit data in month view, but you CAN edit data in week view!
  8. In week view, you will see your study hours displayed by the time of the day with vertical colored blocks. These blocks can be clicked and edited. When you click a color block, you will see a popup that says “Edit Session Block”. You can edit the color, start time, and end time. You can only edit time here in military time (24 hours). To edit the legend and its corresponding subject/colors, please read step 4 above.
  9. Another editing feature in week view is the ability to add time to the tracker. This is helpful when you forgot to use the in-game timer. Click the big plus symbol above any day of the week to add time to that day. You will need to add time in military time. Choose a color. You can link a subject to the color by clicking the color listed in the legend and editing it.
  10. Other buttons under the drop down menu in the bottom right corner of the screen is the “24:00” button which you can click to toggle between military time and “12:00” which is 12 hour AM/PM time for the vertical axis of time in week view of the tracker.
